Judging by its home release cover, you’d think that Rob Margolies’ Roommate Wanted would be a full-blown horror film. Oddly enough, this is not the case at all, as there really aren’t any horror elements to be seen whatsoever.
Don’t get me wrong, this film about two roommates who get on each other’s nerves enough to want to savagely beat each other does get pretty brutal at certain points, but I still wouldn’t call it a ‘horror’ per se.
The writing [by Aaron Edward] is pretty great, as I loved almost every single line that came out of actress Spencer Grammer’s foul mouth. Her performance as the slutty, gym/tanning obsessed Dee was brilliant and lines like ‘How many guys have spelunkered the Garber caverns?’,’Chocolate is the leading cause of a FUPA,’ and ‘Trim that bush fro. You’re not Don King’ had me rolling the entire time. The wonderful Alexa Vega (Spy Kids, Repo! The Genetic Opera) was also great, as always, in her role as the intelligent and proper Janie Garber.
There is a moment, or should I say a good 15 minutes, where the film takes a kind of dark turn and I finally got what I thought I was getting from the start, things like Dee feeding Janie’s dog to her pet snake and Janie pulling a gun on Dee, but even then, things settled down to almost a dull hum rather quickly. Unfortunately, even with its ironic ending, Roommate Wanted left me wanting more in a big way.
