Any fan of werewolf flicks knows that there has been a shortage of good films in the horror sub-genre as of late. We’ve had some great entries over the last few years with the likes of Late Phases and Howl, but that’s all I can really think of that are worth mentioning. Oh, other than that one great horror comedy from a few years back called WolfCop. Four years later, writer and director Lowell Dean has finally delivered on his promise of the return of furry crime fighter Lou Garou with his sequel Another WolfCop.
Billionaire entrepreneur Sydney Swallows (Yannick Bisson) brings a Christmas miracle to the town of Woodhaven when he opens a new brewery and revives the local hockey team. The town saviour has some darker motives behind his new ventures, however. It’s up to the lycan lawman, Lou Garou (Leo Fafard) aka WolfCop, to stop Swallows and his team of shifters and robots.
If you’ve seen the first film in this series, you already know what to expect with Another WolfCop. If you haven’t had the pleasure of viewing Lowell Dean’s first installment, however, you’re in for an over-the-top 79 minutes that you’ll never see coming.
Another WolfCop sees the return of Leo Fafard as the titular protagonist, Amy Matysio as his partner and new police Chief, Tina, and a resurrected Willie played by Jonathan Cherry (Final Destination 2). These WolfCop alumni are joined by a whole slew of new characters, with cameos from the fellas behind another little indie favorite, The Editor, Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, and Kevin Smith (Clerks, Tusk), playing the role of interim Mayor of Woodhaven, bringing his unique brand of comedic gold to the raucous party. The entire cast does a wonderful job portraying their respective characters, none taking themselves too seriously in this silly, 80’s inspired sci-fi monster flick.
Like its predecessor, Another WolfCop features tons of gore, way more than necessary (but always welcome), all displayed beautifully by practical make-up effects. Our favorite werewolf police officer rips bad guys apart, limb from limb, decapitates the rival hockey team with their own hockey sticks, and much more. On top of all of that, the transformation scenes rival those of classics like An American Werewolf in London and The Howling. Emerson Ziffle is one insanely talented artist and I sincerely love everything he has done for both of the films in this now franchise.
Lowell Dean and his small team have brought fans of the weird and goofy another great installment in horror comedy hybrid film. While I don’t necessarily like it as much as I did the first one, I respect what has been done here. Everyone behind this film believes in its characters and just want to have a good time expanding the universe as much as they can. I will gladly watch any sequel they may release in the future and look forward to the further perfection of WolfCop, Willie, Tina, and all of the other great characters we have met along the way.
I recommend this film to anyone looking for that next popcorn flick, the next movie to just sit back, crack open your favorite beverage, and enjoy a snack and a laugh to. Pick up a copy of Another WolfCop on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, available now from RLJE Films.
