Beyond the Grave Review

Beyond the Grave

Writer/director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro has a bright future in the horror genre. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, hopefully I can sway you to check out his film Beyond the Grave aka Porto Dos Mortos.

This film is a fantastic take on many horror sub-genres with a western vibe. Relentless and violent, the pace is astounding as well as the cinematography and editing. Most indie films tend to not focus so much on the bread and butter, they just go for the meat and potatoes. BTG has some of the best acting in an independent film I have seen in a long time, though it’s in Spanish. The talent is obvious. Pinheiro manages to successfully combine a western vibe with Argento-like Italian style set in a world Don Coscarelli would have dreamed up.

While zombies are present, the story could easily exist without them. The effects are also top-notch, bringing each gory detail to life in fantastic fashion.

I haven’t heard if this has won any awards on the indie scene, but if it hasn’t, it deserves a ton of them. It gets the Rottin’ Roger DeMarco official seal of approval with 3.5 Samurai swords out of 5.

Beyond the Grave is actually available in its entirety for free on Hulu, as we speak. Feel free to give it a watch and let us know what you thought in the comments below!
