Saturday Morning Mystery Review

When I was growing up we had a ton of great cartoons to watch early Saturday morning. With a big bowl of cereal and our trusty real ghostbuster pajamas, we sat through hours of animated bliss. Among those cartoons was the classic and always fun Scooby-Doo. Years later, our generation is all grown up and we often get into random conversations about the things we grew up on. For instance, would the Mystery Machine crew really be good at solving the “paranomal” incidents they always stumble upon? Or would the villain simply dispatch the inexperienced young group of would-be “ghostbusters?”

Well, Spencer Parsons’ Saturday Morning Mystery answers all of those questions with a honest horror upgrade. Hired to investigate a haunting at the Kyser Mansion, our crew is optimistic at the hope of finding real paranormal proof. Since previous outings have proven to be all false hauntings, you could say that the crew is split 50/50 on the chances of finding said proof.

The story moves along steadily, really building up the last act of the film. What could have been a really lazy attempt to cash in on the Scooby-Doo gimmick, becomes something much more, throughout the course of the film. It does have some wonderful nods to the Saturday morning cartoons, including a great villain chase through the mansion (all that’s missing is corny cartoon music). Solid gore effects and a creepy setting really add to the “horror” stamp of approval.

The few titles I have seen released from the “XLratorMacabre” company have all been solid horror films. This movie just gave me another reason to pick up any horror I see with that company attached. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. This film gets the Rottin‘ Roger Demarco seal of approval with 4 meddling kids out of 5.

I just watched this and I have to say I didn’t like it. I found the first hour boring, and the last part of the movie did have some killings and chasings but it couldn’t make up for me anymore. I was kind of glad it was finished. I think this movie was a nice attempt to make something original, but I still feel a little bit like I’ve just wasted my time..
