‘Tis No Feckin’ Lobster!

Grabbers Review

A few months ago, I stumbled upon a trailer for the film “Grabbers” while roaming what I like to call the “strange side of youtube”. Immediately, the trailer for this film had reeled me in. It sort of had this self-aware, Joss Whedon dialog style and this gnarly “Deep Rising” looking animated monster. I couldn’t wait to see it and when I finally got my chance, I was completely blown away.

We get some great dialog between characters, very reminiscent of a “Shaun of the Dead” or “Tremors”. Although, if I could compare it alongside any film, it would probably be 2006’s “Slither.” The stories aren’t even similar; it’s just the style in which both films were executed. They have this humorous tug-of-war with the scary imagery and the snide wit of some of main cast. The characters remain playful, and it’s just on the right side of cheesey.

This has so many things that work for it. It’s astounding to me that the CGI monsters looked so amazing. I’m a firm believer in practical effects, but I just cannot get over the creature effects in this film. I fully recommend this movie for anyone into the creature feature sub-genre.

I need to see this movie. I’ve seen some scenes of it, and it seemed funny. And as you described, I think the CGI monsters were indeed looking very cool. If you’re comparing it with Slither, Tremors and Shaun Of The Dead, then that only adds up to the reasons why I want to watch this.

I saw it yesterday, great movie! Very funny, I might go as far to say that this been the best creature feature I’ve seen this year!
