One of my favorite overlooked films has got to be 1988’s Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Most self-respecting cinema fans would take one look at the title and not even give it the time of day. I, however, don’t respect myself… wait. In all seriousness, this movie was a staple of my youth and has become a family favorite now that I have children of my own.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space is almost the perfect introduction to genre because it’s so over the top. The Chiodo brothers absolutely dominate every aspect of filmmaking here with creature design, likeable characters, memorable deaths, and a rockin’ theme.
When a falling star leads Mike and Debbie to a random circus tent out in the woods, it’s everything but fun and games. Aliens disguised as clowns begin to wreak havoc on the small town in a variety of ways. All of which would be incredibly terrifying if they weren’t done so tongue-in-cheek like Evil Dead 2.
This is a rollercoaster of a film that is perfect for any time of the day. It’s too much fun to be scary, even though some of the clown designs may make you feel a little creeped out. There is one scene in particular with officer Mooney that ramps up the actual horror of the killer clown invasion. Suzanne Snyder (Return of the Living Dead 2, Night of the Creeps) really shines in this movie as the terrified Debbie… even if she takes what seems like the longest shower in cinema history with NO NUDITY.
Lack of nudity aside, Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a top-notch popcorn flick that is worth your time. I seriously doubt any of you haven’t seen it, but if by some chance you missed this one, do yourself a favor and check it out.
I give this one 4 knocked off blocks out of 5.
Great movie. I recently bought a Killer KLOWNS shirt from this film
