Brutal Massacre Review

I usually stay away from films that spoof the horror genre. I’m not really fond of parody movies in general. Every great once in a while, I find some sort of hidden gem that I am almost ashamed to say I had never seen it.

A few years ago, when the “Movie Gallery” stores went out of business, me and a buddy skipped work and took a serious amount of money with us. When we left, we had each purchased something like 200 films. I’ll admit I went right for things that I already knew and loved, but there were some random “blind buys.” One of which was Stevan Mena’s “Brutal Massacre.”

I’m sad to say this movie sat on my shelf for nearly a year before I gave it a fair chance. This movie boasts, right on the cover, that it’s “Spinal Tap for Horror.” Within the first few minutes, you are sucked right into this mockumentary film. Director Harry Panderecki, played by David Naughton of “American Werewolf in London” fame, is in the early stages of making his new film, “Brutal Massacre,” though he is struggling to find budgeting, plagued by accidents on set, terrible actors, and constant berading of critics. He goes all out to re-invigorate his career as a once successful genre director.

Any horror buff will easily point out some of the cast in this hilarious film from Ken Foree and Gunnar Hansen to Ellen Sandweiss. I’m a very big fan of dry humor and this film delivers it a plenty while also giving us a fairly realistic look at independent guerilla style film making! It’s honest in its dishonesty, if that makes sense to any of you.

This is not “Terror Firmer” by Troma and though the plot is similar, “Brutal Massacre” takes the high road and makes this movie a genuine mockumentary. Yes, it’s silly, but it never crosses the line of “Troma-Absurdity”. If you’re a fan of the horror genre, this sort of is a must see… at least it is in my book.

This film gets the Rottin’ Roger Demarco seal of approval with 4 out-of-focus nipples out of 5…wait, who has 5 nipples?
