The Sky, it Fell From the Sky!

The Blob Review

In 1995, the remake of the classic The Blob was already 7 years old and forgotten by a lot of people… except me. I was turning 11 and I had seen the 1988 version one very late Saturday night on Encore. I was enthralled with this movie, as a child. In fact, it was the only thing I wanted for my birthday. We hunted and hunted and eventually found it at a mom and pop rental shop. The used VHS became all mine in its magnificent glory. Fast forward, now I’m 29 years old and this movie still makes me as happy as the first time I watched it.

Sure, some of the stop motion is far outdated and there’s some obvious green screening, but this movie is a pure horror delight. Chuck Russell manages to take everything that made the original work and expand on it in that grand 80’s horror way — killing off characters you truly expect to survive, mixing humor with total terror, and some of the best and nastiest effects since Carpenter’s The Thing.

The cast is great, as is the acting. Kevin Dillon, Shawnee Smith, Jeffrey DeMunn, Joe Seneca, Art LaFleur, and Paul McCrane all pretty much own every moment they have on-screen. I can’t speak highly enough of this movie. This one just takes me back to being a kid and that might not be enough of a reason for you to check it out, but for me, it’s a total blast.

I recommend it in a big way; If you dig creature features, sci-fi, and 80’s films, you really need to see this one. I give this movie 4 ribbed condoms out of 5.

I love this movie! I used to have it, but unfortunately not anymore. I heard rumors that this will be remade in the future, I have mixed feelings about that.
