Good Luck, Butthole

Tom Holland's Twisted Tales Review

When I hear the names William Forsythe (The Devil’s Rejects), Ray Wise (Dead End), Angela Bettis (The Woman), Sarah Butler (I Spit on Your Grave), or AJ Bowen (You’re Next), the last thing that comes to mind is low-budget, horrible computer generated effects, and terrible acting. Unfortunately, with Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales, that’s all we get.

Twisted Tales is presented in anthology form with introductions to each short by legendary horror director and writer, Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play). Originally a web series, the segments’ themes do vary, containing stories of everything from apocalyptic disasters to werewolves. The fact that each installment is different than the last does at least show some originality, but sadly that is the only positive thing I can say about this presentation.

Given the miniscule budget that must have been provided for the series, one would think the stories wouldn’t rely heavily on special effects. On the contrary, there are certain parts of this anthology series that actually revolve around scenes of total green-screen use. In my opinion, this greatly hindered the enjoyment I could get from Twisted Tales. In addition to these horrid effects, the acting was almost non-existent at points. Somehow, even the most talented actors appearing in the series, didn’t perform exceptionally well. This may be due to subpar screenwriting, but it is still rather disappointing.

I was very excited when I heard the announcement of this DVD release. While there are some major flaws with the overall presentation of the series’ shorts, you may still enjoy it. Give it a shot and see if you agree with me or not. You can pick up the official DVD release on March 18 from Image Entertainment.

Sadly, I have to give Tom Holland’s Twisted Tales 1.5 webisodes out of 5.
