Directors Laurence Holloway and Richard Stoudt’s new film, Voices From the Grave, brings us a horror anthology that has everything we would expect plus more.
I have to say that for a lower budget film, the stories in Voices really move at a pace that you wouldn’t expect and despite some acting and voice overs being less than stellar, the story is captivating and fun.
Each of the three segments are fun with no real weak links among them. The first story, “All Hallows Eve,” is about a man who feels responsible for the death of his brother. Nothing can really put him in the Halloween spirit, except maybe a visit from beyond the grave. The second story, “Invitation,” is probably my favorite of the three. When a man gets invited to a party, all is not what it seems. The third story, “Re-possesed,” was my least favorite out of the bunch and that’s not really a bad thing, considering this one is still pretty damn awesome. A young man comes across the deal of a lifetime for his first set of wheels (perhaps he should have checked the Carfax.) This is an excellent example of what can be done on a smaller scale budget and if your heart is in the right place, you can make something just as scary as the pros.
The cinematography is very well done and strives to be as unique as possible. Each story is tied together nicely with a wraparound story that isn’t over thought or ridiculously convenient. The scares are plentiful and fans of Creepshow and V/H/S will be pleasantly surprised at how well this film keeps up with the big boys.
