In an over-saturated subgenre like the zombie films, I’ve been lucky enough to watch a good amount of movies that actually manage to deliver a great deal of originality. There are tons are horrible low-budget indie flicks centered around zombies, but when the filmmakers of said films go ahead and make fun of their own movies, it turns out to be a pretty entertaining situation. This is proven perfectly with Mike Masters and David Francis’ Reel Zombies.
A real life zombie apocalypse has broken out and it is now the perfect opportunity for Mike Masters and David Francis to make the third film in their extremely low-budget franchise, Zombie Night. With the use of real zombies captured by some hired zombie wranglers, a mortician make-up artist, some new and old cast members, and the original film crew, Zombie Night 3 is ready to be made… The only problem is anything and everything that can go wrong, does!
It is well documented that I am not a big fan of horror films that are goofy. Roger is the Troma guy; he’s the indie guy; he loves the no-budget flicks. I give them all a chance and usually just end up hating them all. I’m happy to say that is not the case this time around. Reel Zombies is fun from start to finish. It is goofy and cheesy, but I couldn’t have asked for a more entertaining movie to just sit back and enjoy.
The acting is corny as hell and it is perfect. You can tell that the entire crew had a great time making a film that mocks everything they tried to do with their first two projects, Zombie Night and Awakening (Zombie Night 2). They are constantly talking smack about the scenes they are shooting, the script is constantly changing, and everything continues to go wrong; Cast and crew members meet their fate as a result of using real zombies, but the shooting must go on, until the film is complete!
The zombie make-up was very terribly done, but again, this was done purposely and it couldn’t have been presented any differently for this film to work as well as it has.
If you are looking for a fun zombie flick that you don’t have to take too seriously, do yourself a favor and check out Reel Zombies. I give this movie 3.5 unlabeled tapes out of 5.
